Message My take:

Its torque at the wheels that matter... The gear and final drive ratios affect what torque is at the wheels... That rotary putting out 180 torque / 500 HP is probably spinning way upwards of 9 grand, meaning that its staying in a lower gear, and hence, has more torque *at the wheels, at certain speeds* than an old school v8 that has (over) twice the torque but needs to shift to fourth by the end of the 1/4 mile.

Assuming two vehicles of equal weight, measure torque at the wheels during a 1/4 mile run (e.g. through first, second, etc). Whichever has the greater area under the curve now that we are accounting for gearing, will be faster.
